Central North Carolina winters are mild compared to the Northeast, but they are more than cold enough to destroy an unprotected irrigation system. A single hard freeze can crack PVC pipe, split sprinkler heads, and ruin backflow assemblies — repairs that routinely cost far more than a season of preventive winterization. The Professional Winterization Process

A proper blowout is more than shutting off a valve. Our irrigation crews:

1. Shut off the water supply to the irrigation system at the main.
2. Set the controller to rain or off mode so it will not try to run over winter.
3. Blow out every zone with compressed air — forcing all standing water out of the pipes, heads, and valves, zone by zone, until each line runs dry.
4. Drain and insulate the backflow preventer, the component most vulnerable to freeze damage.
5. Inspect components for existing wear so anything that needs attention can be handled before spring.

Why DIY Winterization Is Risky

Simply closing the main valve leaves water sitting in low points, valve bodies, and sprinkler heads. Homeowner air compressors rarely move enough volume (CFM) to clear a full zone, and too much pressure can damage heads and seals. A professional blowout uses the right volume at safe pressure to clear the entire system without harming it. Getting it wrong in either direction is what turns a $150 service into a $2,000 repair.
